Focus Activities are powerful events that unlock students' natural fascination and intrinsic motivation. Generating student questions and arriving at a problem definition are essential components of Focus Activities. Select TWO of the sample culminating performance tasks and (1) create a Focus Strategy for each of the culminating performance tasks and (2) identify possible Engaging Questions that students might ask as a result of the Focus Strategy used with each culminating task. Using Inspiration or a free online graphic organizer, design a Question web to illustrate your questions.

Sample Performance Task:
Students will measure a room of their house. From these measurements, they will then sketch a drawing of the room, convert the measurements to square yards, and calculate the amount of carpeting needed. Students will then investigate to determine costs of tile floors or carpeting for their room.

Focus Strategy:
What does your ideal bedroom look like? How could you describe it to someone? How would you know if all the things you wanted to put in your room would fit? Let's use Gliffy.com to work together to create an ideal bedroom.
Using a computer connected to an LCD projector, the teacher would then model the creation of the ideal bedroom, taking suggestions from students, and using gliffy.com to construct the layout.
